Cryotherapy in detail
Cryotherapy is a therapeutic technique that involves exposing the body or a body part to extremely low temperatures to treat various medical conditions and improve general well-being. The term "cryotherapy" comes from the Greek "cryo" meaning cold, and "therapy", meaning treatment. This method has been used for centuries, but has gained popularity in recent years due to its applications in dermatology to remove various types of benign skin lesions such as warts, skin tags, molluscum pendulums or contagiosums, seborrheic or actinic keratoses, condylomas and others. This treatment is done by applying liquid nitrogen or another cooling agent directly to the affected area, freezing the abnormal tissue, which then detaches naturally. Cryotherapy is generally well tolerated, but it can cause minor side effects, such as pain, redness, or scarring.
Liquid nitrogen treatment of skin lesions
Liquid nitrogen treatment is an effective method commonly used to remove benign skin lesions such as warts. Warts, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), appear as small, rough growths on the skin. They can be bothersome, painful and, in some cases, spread to other parts of the body or to other people.
During treatment, liquid nitrogen at very low temperatures (around -196 degrees Celsius) is applied directly to the legion either with a soaked cotton swab or sprayed 1 to 2 cm from the skin with a suitable spray. The application time varies from a few seconds to a minute, depending on the size and thickness of the skin lesion. This exposure to extreme cold causes the infected skin cells to freeze rapidly, leading to their destruction. Thus, cryotherapy works by damaging the tissues of the wart, which triggers the body's natural immune response to eliminate dead cells and fight the virus. Immediately after an application, the treated area may turn white due to freezing, and a tingling or burning sensation may be felt. Subsequently, the skin lesion and surrounding skin may swell, blister, and then turn into a scab that will naturally peel off after one to two weeks. In some cases, several cryotherapy sessions may be necessary to completely eliminate the wart, especially if it is large or resistant to treatment.
The liquid nitrogen treatment process is therefore relatively simple and quick.
